NC Methamphetamine Initiative and ASU Partnership for Methamphetamine Treatment Program Development and Evaluation

Since 2004 Appalachian State University has been involved in the development of the local methamphetamine family treatment initiative and program evaluation. The local Watauga/Ashe project, aka Family Solutions, is being evaluated across the state as a potential model for the treatment of families affected by methamphetamine abuse. The North Carolina Division of Mental Health/Developmental Disabilities/Substance Abuse Services Division, an interdisciplinary team of ASU faculty and students (Social Work, Human Development and Psychological Counseling, the Department of Psychology), New River Behavioral Healthcare and the Department of Social Services have formed a partnership to develop and evaluate several of NC’s area programs' methamphetamine treatment initiatives. This project provides varied opportunities for students. These opportunities include:

  • Exposure to cutting edge methamphetamine family treatment
  • Exposure to real world evaluation of the methamphetamine treatment
  • Participation for selected students in research assistantships
  • Participation for selected students in internships related the treatment initiative.
