Tobacco Roundtable
Tobacco Roundtable
On December 19, 2005 the Institute for Health and Human Services Tobacco Roundtable was convened for the first time. A preliminary study on alternative and complimentary medicine conducted through Healthy Carolinians by Dr. Denise Martz-Ludwig and Ms. Gillian Baker suggested that physicians were interested in assisting their patients with tobacco cessation. An evolution of this study was the development of the Tobacco Roundtable. The purpose of the Roundtable was to bring together representatives from organizations involved with tobacco cessation/prevention programs, discuss current and past programs, determine a way for Appalachian State University's Institute for Health and Human Services to partner with other community agencies in programming and to develop research agendas related to local tobacco prevention efforts.
Organizations represented on the Roundtable include:
-
Institute for Health and Human Services: Dr. Jamie Moul, Dr. Lisa
Curtin, Ms Mandy Latz
Northwest Tobacco Prevention Coalition: Ms. Teri VanDyke
Appalachian Regional Health Care: Ms. Gillian Baker
Watauga Medical Center: Ms. Debbie Shook
Watauga County Schools: Ms. Dana Holden
Appalachian State University Department of Nursing: Dr. Karen Reesman
Appalachian State University Department of Health, Leisure, & Exercise Science: Ms. Susan Perry
Work to Date:
-
1. Local physicians were surveyed as to their interest in specific tobacco prevention
programs/materials.
2. An informational packet is being developed for healthcare providers. The packet will contain literature on tobacco cessation from the CDC, NC Quitline, National Cancer Society, NC Health and Wellness Trust, and Northwest Tobacco Prevention Coalition. Dana Holden's SWAT Team from the Watauga County Schools will deliver the packets to the healthcare providers in late April early May.
3. The Roundtable, through the efforts of Mandy Latz, will have a booth at Appalachian State University's Wellness Center Fair in April. The booth will provide tobacco cessation and prevention information. Additionally, carbon monoxide measures will be taken on tobacco users who wish to participate, literature provided on smoking cessation, and a one month follow-up to determine quit success.
